oils for Amoco Oil (Summer 1973).
SELECT ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Identified mechanisms of thermal degradation involvement in wear process during
machining of particle board.
- Developed method to correct systematic errors in semi-empirical Quantum Chemistry
calculations, allowing accurate calculation of thermal stability of polymers as well
as small molecules.

a new process, the development of a new polymer grade, and the identification of
a potential new feedstock.
- Led corporate-wide olefin purity team and invented a new analytical technique, resulting
in the recovery of lost business and improved plant operations, representing $1.9
million.
- Promoted the creation of the Computational Chemistry Group in Amoco Chemicals, and
applied computational methods to business unit research projects, provided results
with an estimated value of $2.7 million.
- Initiated program of individual consultations to identify where Computational Chemistry
methods offer an advantage over traditional research methods, ultimately saving an
estimated $300,000 in experimentation.
- Invented a breakthrough for catalytic cracking of hydrocarbons to light olefins.
- Developed theory for modeling catalyst sites in zeolites to support chemicals and
refinery catalyst developments.
- Developed theory of oil additive interactions resulting in reduced cost of formulation
and improving profitability for marketed product.
- Developed alternative engine test, saving $200,000 per year for oil formulation evaluations.
- Organized PC Users Group, which promoted the effective use of PCs and reduced support
costs by providing an alternative source of information and training.
- Developed new synthetic method for double ring expansion of hydrocarbons.
